Lessons I Learned
The Lessons I Learned are series of nonfiction books about life lessons I've learned throughout the years. My intent in writing these vulnerable and transparent books is in the hope that these books might help others along the way during their trials and how God and Jesus Christ will show their love and guidance during our trials.
We See You Parents of LGBTQ Children
Lessons I Learned from My LGBTQ Children
As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mary Beth's world was shaken when her son, and then her daughter, came out as members of the LGBTQ community. Among the questions she wrestled with were: Should children continue attending church services when they feel ostracized and emotionally unsafe? What stages will they experience, and how will this affect the family’s new reality? When children have questions about their identities, how can parents support and be an ally to them?
Seeking answers, Mary Beth learned about the five stages of coming out and how they often mirrored the five stages parents go through in accepting their child's identity. As Mary Beth allowed the whisperings of the Spirit to guide her as she navigated this new and unexpected path, she came to a profound understanding of God’s unconditional love for her children and herself.
Her book serves as a beacon of hope for other parents facing similar journeys, offering practical advice, spiritual guidance, and the assurance that they are not alone. Mary Beth's message is one of love, acceptance, and the eternal truth that every child of God is worthy of inclusion and respect. In the end, Mary Beth's faith is strengthened rather than diminished by her experiences.
